Martin Luther King Jr.'s wise words remind us that the ultimate purpose of education is to cultivate intense and critical thinking, combined with character. However, as educators, we often face a significant obstacle: students who lack the skills to learn effectively. When students don't know how to learn, true education is hindered. In this post we will explore the challenges of teaching critical thinking and introduce a solution that can transform your students' learning journey.
The Struggle is Real
As teachers, you've likely encountered students who:
- Struggle to comprehend complex concepts
- Fail to connect the dots between different ideas
- Lack the skills to evaluate information critically
- Are unable to think creatively
- Get frustrated and disengage from the learning process
These challenges can be frustrating and disheartening, making it difficult to achieve the goals of true education.
The Solution: Teaching Students How to Learn
The key to unlocking critical thinking and intense learning is to teach students HOW to Learn. When students know how to learn, they can:
Approach problems with confidence and resilience
Analyze information critically and make informed decisions
Develop a growth mindset and embrace challenges
Collaborate effectively and support one another
Take ownership of their learning journey

In today's fast-paced world, the ability to study effectively is crucial for success, yet many overlook its importance. For black parents and students, understanding the impact of effective study techniques can pave the way for a brighter future. At Actual Study Know-How, a subsidiary of Applied Scholastics Inc., we recognize the correlation between the inability to study and long-term consequences such as limited success and even incarceration.
Studies show that individuals who struggle with studying are more likely to face challenges in school, leading to lower academic achievement. This, in turn, can limit their opportunities for higher education and lucrative careers. Without proper study skills, many find themselves trapped in a cycle of underachievement, hindering their ability to reach their full potential.
Furthermore, the inability to study effectively can have profound effects on personal development and decision-making. As opportunities diminish, individuals may turn to alternative paths, including engaging in activities that lead to incarceration.
By implementing Study Tech, a compilation of proven study techniques developed by Applied Scholastics, students can unlock their full potential and pave the way for a successful future. Through targeted methods aimed at improving comprehension, retention, and application of knowledge, students can overcome academic hurdles and pursue their dreams with confidence.
At Actual Study Know-How, we're committed to empowering black parents and students with the tools they need to succeed academically and beyond.

Studying and doing your best, but still not making it? Tired of being told that you just need to "focus" and “study harder”?
We get it – drowning in textbooks, feeling stressed. Trying to "study harder" without any clue how?
In school we've all had that advice to "study more",' ‘focus," and "pay attention" and we try to do our best to do just that. But it doesn’t work. This leaves us feeling frustrated, like we’re ‘not good at’ some subject or maybe we feel stupid.
This can even lead to dropping classes or dropping out of college altogether and giving up on your dreams. I know you don’t want that to happen.
Let's ditch the struggle and figure out and learn some real study hacks.
The first thing to know is that you were never taught HOW TO STUDY.
Trying to excel academically without being taught effective study techniques is like being told to drive without ever being taught how to operate a car, and then being told to "drive harder" when we struggle. Just as driving requires learning the rules of the road, mastering academic success involves learning the strategies and techniques that make studying effective.
Ready to level up your study game? We’ll show you HOW to study smarter, not just harder.
Is there a GUARANTEED method of learning that will ensure SUCCESS in studying and applying any subject?
YES, THERE IS!!

The Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are a group of 108 colleges and universities that were initially founded to provide an education for Black people in America in order to prepare us for full participation in a democratic society. The first of these colleges was founded On February 25, 1837, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. Since then, there have been several generations of family members who graduated from an HBCU.
What does this have to do with Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu? In his book, Developing Positive Self-Images & Discipline in Black Children, Dr. Kunjufu articulates at least two key reasons the HBCUs are so important to our cultural development.
First, Dr. Jawanza makes the point that “We believe that schools are more than academic institutions; they are also social institutions.” When referring to social institutions, he clarifies his idea by making reference to the impact that a person’s peer group has on a student’s thinking and behavior. For instance, if one’s peer group thinks that being a good student is “trying to act white,” then one has great pressure to not excel in educational pursuits. In other words, the peer group may have one set of values and the parents and the teachers another. Research by the University of Michigan in 1950 listed the hierarchy of influences on a child as follows: 1) home, 2) school, 3) church, 4) peer group, and 5) television. In 1980-1985, the research shows a significant shift in the hierarchy of influence: 1) home, 2) peer group (streets), 3) television & video games, 4) school. The church is no longer in the picture! Therefore, he thinks that the peer group is one of the greatest influences on the minds of our children and is a vital element to be taken into consideration in creating the ideal circumstances for black children to excel in their educational pursuits.
The HBCUs are an environment of multi-generational educated students. The peer group here reinforces the value of education in one’s life, his/her family’s future, and that of the Community at large. Thus the HBCU environment is an established hundred year old solution to this important issue.
And, the HBCUs address another major issue raised by Dr. Jawanza: black role models.
HBCUs are an environment replete with exemplars: school presidents, provosts, faculty, administrators, Ph.D.s/MDs, lawyers, dentists, nurses, architects, engineers, business people, authors, writers, play rights, producers, dancers, etc. In class, you have your “dad” or “mom” teaching. HBCU faculty and staff are usually there because they see us as their children and care deeply about whether we make it or not. And just like your dad or mom, they know without question that you will make it!
This commitment presents some challenges to the HBCUs. Many have low admission criteria to allow all to have a chance at a college education. Because the nation (and possibly the world) has bought into the idea that a college education is the only road to a better life, more and more community groups or wealthy black well-wishers [Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) Foundation and The LeBron James Family Foundation, and the Social Justice Learning Institute] are facilitating or sponsoring black children’s college education, including tours of HBCUs.
However, the vast majority of our children are coming out of the public school system without mastery of the basic learning tools (reading, writing (utilizing the realization that language is the expression of thought by means of words), mathematics, and thinking skills). Therefore, unless something is done, we are dooming them to fail at an HBCU, or worse, compromising the existence of the HBCU network due to substandard results on basic college metrics: 1) Retention Rate & 2) Graduation Rate—to say nothing of students solving the most pressing problems facing our culture, like leakage (money leaving the black community within 3-6 hours as compared to Tulsa, OK where a dollar circulated on average for 19 months!) and other issues raised in Our Black Year by Maggie Anderson.
A workable answer to the challenge has been found (We did not discover and codify this breakthrough, Mr. L. Ron Hubbard did). But, we have wide experience understanding and applying this simple technology for our own learning and growth. Moreover, we have taught it to grade school, junior high school, high school, and college students (undergrads, masters, and doctorates) as well as practicing professionals without any exception in its results. This is the real deal!
In conclusion, education and culture are intimately connected: “A culture is held together solely and only by education” (lecture Study and Education). If we want a great culture, we are forced to greatly upgrade the quality of education that our children are receiving. We have the missing piece that can make that aim realizable.

Do you remember those frantic nights before exams when you tried to cram an entire semester's worth of information into your brain? Many students have been there, believing that memorization is the key to academic success. But is it really learning?
The short answer: not quite. Memorization might help you regurgitate facts temporarily, but it's often a fleeting endeavor, leaving you with no lasting comprehension. True learning goes beyond mere memorization. It involves understanding, retention, and the ability to apply knowledge effectively.
Cramming for exams might help you pass a test, but it won't foster the critical thinking skills or deep understanding necessary for long-term success. So, what's the alternative?
Effective study skills. These tools empower you to truly learn and retain information.
Make sense?
The problem is that these tools are not commonly taught in schools. Instead, you are told to "study harder", "concentrate more" or "focus more". You've tried all of this and it still hasn't worked.
So, what's the solution?
Attend our free LEARNING HOW TO LEARN ONLINE SEMINAR.
